London 2012 Olympic Games

July 2005, saw London selected as the Host City for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad. Defeating other bid cities Paris, Moscow, New York City and Madrid. London is now the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.

The London 2012 Games will be the most spectacular event in London in living memory, bringing the world together for a global celebration of sport, youth, culture and life; delivering on a completely different scale to that of any previous Games. 

Scheduled to be held from 27 July to 12 August, the 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be centred on the Olympic Park in East London where up to 180,000 spectators a day are expected to visit. Events will also be hosted at a variety of other locations, some existing and historic, others new and temporary; these include Beach Volleyball at Horse Guards Parade, Sailing at Weymouth and Archery at Lord’s Cricket Ground with football matches taking place at stadia across the UK.

In just over 2 weeks approximately 10,500 athletes will take part in 26 sporting events across 34 competition venues. More than 9 million tickets will be available and over 20,000 press and international media.
